In 1858, the land was purchased by American Colonel Charles V. Stuart. He was the first to call the area Glen Ellen, which he named after his beloved wife, Ellen and turned into a ranch. He had a home in Glen Ellen where he lived with his second wife from 1905 until his death in 1916. Glen Ellen was also home to M.F.K.
